DEMOGRAPHIC PROFILE

Niche-based vertical portals provide increased visibility, targeted audiences and greater recognition in a confusing global mass market.

Web-weary travellers, tired of wading through the glut of irrelevant information, want easier ways to find relevant, quality content.

Vertical portals, or vortals, provide specialised, filtered information in an easily navigable format.

lemonkind offers advertisers a unique, loyal and largely untapped niche market.

Australia's gay and lesbian community is estimated to account for about six per cent of the 13.5 million adult population, according to gay marketing consultancy Significant Others.

The lesbian community is highly diverse yet invisible and fragmented with few nation-wide lesbian-specific information networks, events, activities or venues for connecting with others.

The Internet offers a unique opportunity to tap into this potentially lucrative market.

Journalist Yvette Nielsen launched the site in May 2006 to link lesbians in Australia, highlight role models, and share relevant news, ideas, stories and resources to help women lead happy, healthy, fulfilling lives.

A loyal audience expects original, interesting, credible content and attractive, user-friendly design.

lemonkind will continue to draw a growing readership through the free fortnightly e-newsletter, web content and community features of the site (eg forums, chat, classifieds, jobs, gallery).

Email feedback and online surveys suggest our visitors are web savvy and well educated, ranging from students to seniors.

Through word of mouth, extensive listings online, speaking engagements and traditional media, both the site and the free opt-in newsletter have grown rapidly.

The newsletter was first published in July 2006 and typical content includes advice, resources, news, reviews, giveaways and humour.

FAQs

What's traffic?

Traffic refers to the volume of electronic files distributed to the volume of individual visitors to a web site. Traffic can be measured in terms including visits, hits, page views, time spent, bandwidth, downloads, referrals, sessions or unique users.

What's a hit?

Every element of a requested page (including text, graphics and interactive items) is counted as a hit to a server. Page views or unique sessions, not hits, are the preferred units of site-traffic measurement as the number of hits per page can vary widely.

What's an impression?

An impression, or page view, is the number of times an ad banner is requested by site visitors' browsers and presumably seen by the user. This term is often used to tell advertisers how many times their banner ad was seen by visitors viewing the page.

What's CPM?

CPM, or "cost per mille" (French for thousand), means the total cost of 1,000 visitor requests to view an ad (ie the cost for 1,000 impressions). lemonkind does not charge by CPM.
