Background
Australia's lesbian community is diverse yet invisible and fragmented with few nation-wide lesbian-specific information networks, events, activities or venues for connecting with others.
The visible "scene" is small and insular with higher than average rates of domestic violence, depression and anxiety disorders, obesity, substance abuse and suicide (see studies in Health).
An online survey set up in 2004 to analyse needs for a national lesbian web site identified many problems and potential solutions.
Work began on the site in February 2006 and lemonkind was “live” in June.
